Let me tell you about an amazing experience…

FOODIE PENPALS !!

*
The concept is easy, you join and you’re matched with two other food lovers (blogger or reader) The first one send you something and you send something to the last one.
*
Here’s a detailed explanation of the program:
(Thanks to THE LEAN GREEN BEAN to letting us copy this text instead of all writing it over!)

-On the 5th of every month, you will receive your penpal pairing via email. It will be your responsibility to contact your penpal and get their mailing address and any other information you might need like allergies or dietary restrictions.
-You will have until the 15th of the month to put your box of goodies in the mail. On the last day of the month, you will post about the goodies you received from your penpal!
-The boxes are to be filled with fun foodie things, local food items or even homemade treats! The spending limit is $15. The box must also include something written. This can be anything from a note explaining what’s in the box, to a fun recipe…use your imagination!
-You are responsible for figuring out the best way to ship your items depending on their size and how fragile they are. (Don’t forget about flat rate boxes!)
-Foodie Penpals is open to blog readers as well as bloggers. If you’re a reader and you get paired with a blogger, you are to write a short guest post for your penpal to post on their blog about what you received. If two readers are paired together, neither needs to worry about writing a post for that month.
-Foodie Penplas is open to US & Canadian residents. Please note, Canadian Residents will be paired with other Canadians only. We’ve determined things might get too slow and backed up if we’re trying to send foods through customs across the border from US to Canada and vice versa.

This month was my forth time doing it and it was still fun!

I have a friend in England who’s a total foodie (and a cook) and we will do kind of a foodie penpal thing together.. but each month it’s only one of us who’s sending something.. it will be fun knowing that we don’t have the same things, food, books.. in England and in Quebec.. I’m super trilled!

I was matched with a lovely woman named Shannon, she’s from British Columbia, doesn’t have a blog and is a newbie on foodie penpal (but heh I’m too.. only 4 times..). The interesting thing is that she lives where there is the Western Canada’s largest open air farmers market. So she found me great things!

She sent me:

1- Brownie Mix, I made the brownies.. and they were amazing! Almost like homemade, hehe, I loved them.. my husband and my daughter too! I guess it was a hit!

2- Cookie, sooooooooooo moist and delicious! I have to make cookies like that! Mmmm tart cherries!!!

3- Truffle Bar, This one my husband looked at me with little eyes.. asking me if I wanted to share with him, haha I did! This is chocolate like I love! Dark.. with mint!

4- Bacon Sea salt, I love the note she wrote on it.. it was like *Salt=not good, bacon=not good.. bacon salt= super not good, but way too strange not to send you* HAHA! It was funny. In fact it’s true that it is a weird product… I’m still looking at it, waiting for the good moment to taste it. I never saw this in Quebec!

*

A special thanks to Shannon, I loved everything!!!!! It was very fun of you to write me little notes on everything (oh and nice card too!)

*

I was matched with Bibiana, she’s also from BC and she have a blog, you can see it HERE

I guess she will talk about my box on her blog soon..

Like I previously said, this experience is not only about food, but for me it was also about getting in touch with others and had the chance to meet interesting people.

Don’t be shy, try the experience at least one time!

The Lean Green Bean

Barley & Kidney Bean Soup

Standard

I’m a huge fan of soups, in fact my husband is one too, it’s the perfect meal, always easy, fast, delicious, nutritious and we can do it with about everything we have in our fridge!!

Since my man doesn’t like to eat something without a source of proteins (kidney beans is 11g of proteins by 1 cup)… I add some beans! But heh it was super good!

Barley is fantastic, such a great source of fiber and contains iron! What can you ask more!! (I love barley.. in soups, in salads, in a risotto like dish..) Sweet potatoes are a very awesome source of vitamin A (beta-carotene…in one potato you have about 400% of your daily needs…). I know, I know, I focus a lot on what’s inside what I eat, but no choice, I’m pregnant again and after 18 months of trying and fertility drugs, I want a healthy baby! (not that usually I badly eat.. totally the opposite! I always eat good food).

After one bowl, you feel so full, no need for another one.

Servings

4-6 bowls

Ingredients

* 1 large onion, chopped

* 2 stalks celery, chopped

* 3 carrots, peeled and sliced

* 2 garlic cloves, minced

* 1/3 cup uncooked barley

* 1/2 teaspoon ground curry

* 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric

* 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin

* Olive oil

* 6 cups vegetable broth

* 2 cups water

* 1 medium sweet potato, peeled, diced

* 1 1/2 cup diced tomatoes (I used the one I made last Fall)

* 2 cups cooked kidney beans ( I used the small version of kidney beans, hehe)

* In a large pot, heat (medium-high) olive oil, onion, garlic, celery, carrots, barley and spices.

* Bring to boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for  about 20-25 minutes.

* Add sweet potato, beans and tomatoes. Cook for another 20 minutes.

* When the vegetables and the barley are tender, remove from heat.

* Serve with homemade bread and enjoy!

Energy Bars

Standard

I made those little beauties this afternoon.

Since I’m pregnant again (AWWWWWW JOY!!), I’m always hungry, in fact no, because yes I’m hungry as Hell, but I cannot eat a lot at the same time.. so I have to take healthy snacks.. and these bars are way more fun than carrots and hummus (hey I love them too!)

They taste like Heaven! I’m happy because my husband and my 18 months old daughter Dalie loves them too! (hahaha pfffff my boxer dog Meya too.. since Dalie can’t stop herself giving her food to her.. pfff!)

No eggs, no milk, no butter…

and not a drop of oil too..!!

Want one?

First of all, the reason why I didn’t wrote earlier is that I was in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for my honeymoon. We never took it last year (it’s our first anniversary on August 20) because our daughter Dalie was too young, but this year she’s 18 months so she spent a week with one of her grandma (she had a lot of fun!). I’m still super excited to see tomorrow with who I’m paired for August! I guess all the people who also does it are, hehe!

(I’ll talk about my trip in another post…)

*

Let me introduce you to…

This month I was matched with the lovely Lisa from Jogging on Coffee, she’s from Ottawa.

She have a very nice blog for everybody who loves to be in shape, she have great posts. You should all go take a look (even if you like to eat candies, haha)

She sent me..

1- Apple butter, from President choice Black label, I made some last Fall, but it’s always fun to try new products. It’s very good.

2- Poppy seeds wafers, (with old cheddar) from President choice Black label, it’s a very fun product because it have a very unusual taste.

3- Truffles, from President choice Black label. They are absolutely DELICIOUS!! (I’m a big truffle fan, when I was living in France I was always eating some..) The funny part is that when I opened the box they were SUPER MELTED!! Haha! It was VERY VERY VERY hot in Quebec when I received my box so they had the chance to melt. It’s ok.. I put everything in the fridge and ate it like a chocolate bar. (It was still super amazing!) Be careful when you want to send chocolate during summer.

4- Couscous, I don’t know how she found out but I’m a huge fan of couscous and quinoa so I was very happy when I opened the box and saw those.

5- Quinoa, organic, like couscous it’s always a winner, it’s so good. I love Quinoa… A LOT!

*

President Choice launched a new label.. the black label (and no not the cheap beer people from Quebec drink) but a line of brand new products. You can click HERE to go on their site to see what are the amazing products.

Keep your eyes open when you’ll go to Loblaws or Maxi.

*

A special thanks to Lisa, your box was great!

*

I was matched with Jessica from Milton, Ontario. She doesn’t have a blog but she’s a nice girl too!

When I’ll have news from her, I’ll post them here.

Like I previously said, this experience is not only about food, but for me it was also about getting in touch with others and had the chance to meet interesting people.
